The bubble bike

Last year we were invited to the first "Festival of Thrift" at Darlington. No-one knew what to expect.

The organisers were hoping for 10,000 visitors over the weekend. The sun came out and 10,000 arrived on the first day with another 15,000 on the second day and many returned without the kids or husband so they could have a good look around. Here at Percy, we have since welcomed many visitors that we had met over that weekend that have become good friends to Percy. So when the invitation arrived this year we marked the calendar and sent out a call for volunteers to help.

Preparations started with boxes marked up "festival". The "Spin art" bike was cleaned up and given a makeover as it was so well received last year so we were ready. Then we received a message to say we couldn't take the Spinart as the organisers wanted different activities. Thinking caps on, what should we do? After trying out some ideas we decided just to take the Bubble bike and have some peek boards done.  Plans going fine until a fortnight before the event when a message arrived, could we do a Pop up Scrapstore?

Percy's Pop-Up Scrapstore at the Festival of Thrift

Should we /Shouldn't we, have we enough stock so visitors to the store would have a good selection?

Well we decided to go ahead and do it. So last Friday we headed over to Darlington ready to put up the marquee and unload the van. That done, back to refill the van ready for Saturday morning. Instructions stated cars off site by 9am, visitors arrive at 10. Busily sorting out what went where, when at 9.30 the gates opened early and visitors started to pour in.

Being next to the car park we were the first stall many people saw and the crowds soon arrived.  During the day we met folks from all over the country, Essex, Liverpool, Manchester as well as those closer to home. We spread the word about Reuseful UK. Back to the store and another van load packed on Saturday night ready for Sunday and another busy day.

Our team of volunteers and friends we roped in were amazed at the response to our pop up store, we will definitely do it again.
